PrimeOS is the latest Android emulator (Android-x86) for desktop and laptop that lets you experience Android on big screen. While this is incredibly useful for testing Android apps and games without needing a particular device, it would be great to install Android hassle free on any Desktop and Laptop as a secondary or a new OS and that is what I am describing in the below post.

Anyone who has little knowledge on Android and computer can easily install and run Android OS (a.k.a PrimeOS) on a laptop or desktop. PrimeOS is an open-source Android x86 Projects designed to bring Google’s mobile operating system Android to any PC and laptop. The current build is based on Android 7.1.2 Nougat and the status is beta.

PrimeOS is in development stage now. Here we provide PrimeOS .iso image file, how to burn it as a bootable USB drive and how to install it on a desktop PC or laptop. Before begin the installation, let us see what are the features of the OS and known bugs.

Features of PrimeOS

– Offers desktop features like start menu, taskbar, etc.
– Multi-window support with maximize, minimize, close, resize, etc.
– General keyboard shortcuts like alt + tab, alt + f4, win + d etc.
– Taskbar with ability to pin apps, show notification and system icons.
– Decapro key mapping tool to play games with keyboard and mouse (Press F12).
– Pre mapped some popular games, like PUBG, Subway surf, etc are included.
– GPU tools are available to fake GPU info for any game.
– Open Gapps included.
– Supports OTA update .

PrimeOS known bugs (v0.2.0):

– Bluetooth may not work on few devices
– Hardware specific bugs like trackpad, sound, wifi may come on few devices

How to Install PrimeOS on Desktop/Laptop

Note: Backup your data if you’re not sure about what you are doing. Do it at your own risk. We will not be liable if any damage occurs to your device and/or its components.

Pre-Requisites

  • PrimeOS .iso file (download from here or from development page)
  • USB drive with 8GB storage space
  • A desktop or laptop
  • Rufus (download) for making bootable USB drive

Steps to Install PrimeOS

1. Launch Rufus on your PC, select PrimeOS .iso file and create the bootable USB.

2. Create a new partition (minimum 16GB) on your desktop/laptop for PrimeOS.

3. Plug the PrimeOS bootable USB drive to your Desktop/Laptop, turn of secure boot and then boot PrimeOS USB (depending on your Bios use F12 or ESC keys).

4. From GRUB menu, select ‘Install PrimeOS’ option.

5. You will ask to choose partition for installing the OS. Choose you have already created, and select Ext4 for formatting the drive.

6. When it asks if you want to install System as R/W (Read/Write), select YES, otherwise the OTA functionality will break.

7. When it asks if you want to install Grub, select YES.

8. When finished, the installer will then ask if you want to run PrimeOS, you can just reboot here, and make sure you remove the USB drive. [Source – XDA]
