ZenFone Max Pro (M1) was released in May 2018 with Android 8.1 Oreo out of the box. This budget, best performing device has already received official LineageOS support. LineageOS 15.1 ROM is now available for ZenFone Max Pro M1, which is based on Android 8.1 Oreo. The ROM offers several customizations, new features and latest security patches for the device. You can also expect the upcoming LineageOS 16 ROM based on the Android 9.0 Pie for the device.

In this guide, we show you how to install official LineageOS ROM on ZenFone Max Pro M1 (X00TD). Asus lets users unlock ZenFone Max Pro (M1) bootloader, so the installation of LineageOS 15.1 ROM is not a too complicated process. All you need to unlock the bootloader, install TWRP recovery and then flash the latest LineageOS build.

How to install official LineageOS 15.1 on ZenFone Max Pro M1 (X00TD)

Disclaimer: Please follow this guide at your own risk. We can’t take responsibility for anything that goes wrong. This guide is intended for technically talented users only.

Note: This guide requires ADB binary or Google Platform tools on your PC. Also, enable ‘OEM Unlock’ and ‘USB debugging’ options on your phone.

Unlock Bootloader of ZenFone Max Pro (M1)

1. Go to Asus website here and download the Unlock Device Tool APK to your phone

2. Install the Unlock Device Tool APK.

3. Run the application, agree to the terms and follow the onscreen instruction. Press the unlock button to unlock the bootloader.

Note: The ASUS unlock app will ask you to login with your Google account. If your password does not work, then you need to enable temporary access for less secure apps here. If you have two-factor authentication enabled on your Google account, you will have to generate an individual app password on the Google accounts settings website, as the unlock app does not natively support two-factor.

Install TWRP on ZenFone Max Pro (M1)

1. Download TWRP for ZenFone Max Pro M1 from here (unofficial). Official TWRP is not yet available.

2. Copy and paste the downloaded twrp-3.2.3-0-X00TD-20180814.img file inside the ADB installation folder

3. Connect the phone to PC. Go to ADB folder, open a command window and run the command: adb reboot bootloader

# Alternatively, press Volume Up + Power buttons together after switching of the phone.

4. Now, verify your PC finds your phone by typing: fastboot devices

5. Now, run the command ‘fastboot flash recovery twrp-x.x.x-x-X00TD.img’ to flash TWRP.

# Replace the ‘twrp-x.x.x-x-X00TD.img’ with actual file name

6. Now, switch off the phone, hold Volume Down + Power button until you see ASUS logo appears on the screen.

Install LineageOS ROM on ZenFone Max Pro (M1)

1. Download latest version of LineageOS ROM zip file from here and save it on your phone.

2. Download compatible Google apps zip file from here and save it on your phone

3. Switch off the phone, press Volume Down + Power buttons until you see ASUS logo. Your phone should boot into TWRP.

4. Select Backup > and create back up of all partitions

5. Select Wipe > Format Data > and format data. Return to Wipe > Advanced wipe > select Cache and System partitions and wipe it.

6. Select Install > go to LineageOS zip file and swipe to flash it. Also, flash Google apps zip file.

7. Once installation has finished, return to the main menu, tap Reboot, and then System.
