Samsung Galaxy S6 and S6 Edge start getting the October Android Security Patches via a new update. The Galaxy S6 Edge (SM-G925F) variant in UK has received the update with build number G925FXXU5EQI8. The update for other regions is imminent. As the OTA update is rolled out in phases, users need to wait for OTA update, which will hit Galaxy S6/ S6 Edge devices in couple of days.

Samsung has already released October 2017 Android Security patches for for Galaxy S8 and Galaxy Note 8. The October 2017 update addresses a number of vulnerabilities found in the Android OS (more than 200) as well as fixes six vulnerabilities found in Samsung’s TouchWiz software.

The Galaxy S6 edge update (G925FXXU5EQI8) is still based on Android 7.0 Nougat and does not include any new features other than October 2017 Android Security patches. However, all users are recommending updating their device to the latest version, as it will patch several critical vulnerabilities (details here).

Depending on the region and carrier, it will take a week or more to get the new OTA update on your Galaxy S6 (SM-G920F) and Galaxy S6 Edge (SM-G925F). Alternately, experienced users can download the firmware and flash manually via Odin.

Note: Updating firmware manually using Odin utility is a risky job. We recommend OTA (over-the-air) update or by using Samsung’s Smart Switch app to update your device to latest version.
