Motorola started upgrading its Moto X4 to Android 9 Pie and the update is now available in various regions. If you own a Moto X4 Retail variant and if it is running on Android 8.0 Oreo October patch (build OPWS27.2.5/ OPW27.2.5), then here is how to upgrade your Moto X4 to Android 9 Pie with locked bootloader.

This guide is tested on Moto X4 XT1900-4 and XT1900-7 variant with Android 8.0 Oreo and patch level October 1, 2018. That is, your device should be on software version OPW27.2.5 (openmx) or OPWS27.2.5 (reteu) to install the Pie update manually. First check your software version and then try the below method to upgrade your phone to Android 9 Pie.

Requirements:

– Moto X4 (XT1900-4/XT1900-7) runs October Security Patch
– No bootloader unlock, root, custom recovery, Xposed modules or any mods
– At least 80% battery charge remaining on the phone

Installation Instruction

1. Download Android 9 Pie OTA update [here/source] and place it in the root directory of internal storage.

2. Now, enable Storage access for Motorola Update Service. To do so, go to Apps > tap 3 dot menu > select Show System > enable storage permission.

3. Now, go to Settings > About phone > System updates to update your phone.

4. After rebooting, enjoy Android 9 Pie.

Note that this method will not alter your software channel. It should be the same. All your apps should be in place. In addition, no need a software reset. (source – xda)
