Facebook starts implementing the cross-app messaging feature to the Instagram app. So users can send messages to anyone on Facebook from their Instagram app and vice versa. The main advantage of this feature is that Instagram users don’t need to install Facebook Messenger on their phones to send messages and reshare posts.

Here’s how to chat with Facebook contacts from your Instagram app. The cross-app messaging feature is rolling out globally, and it’ll reach all users soon. Though there are few limitations, like send a message to a single contact, it could be a useful feature for many.

  1. Update your Instagram app on your Android and iOS to the latest version and open it.
  2. You should see a Messenger icon instead of the Direct Message icon. If not, you may need to wait for a new update to get the feature.
  3. Tap on the new Messenger icon at the top right corner, and in the search bar, type your Facebook contact name to whom you want to chat.
  4. Tap the name of the contact that appeared in the Facebook friends section.
  5. You’ll see a prompt, saying You’re Messaging a Facebook Account.
  6. You can now send a message, and your Facebook contact will also see a prompt.

Note that, from Facebook Messenger, users can send messages to Instagram. Search for your contact’s Instagram profile and send the message from the Facebook app.
