As you all know, Ubuntu available in three flavors, a Desktop edition, Netbook edition, and a Server edition. Netbook edition has an innovative desktop called Unity, which was optimized for smaller screens. However, from Ubuntu 11.04 onwards there will not a separate Netbook edition or desktop edition.ubuntu-netbook

According to Canonical, “The introduction of the new shell for Ubuntu means that we have a user interface that works equally well whatever the form factor of the PC. And the underlying technology works on a range of architectures including those common in netbook, notebooks, desktops or whatever you choose to run it on. Hence the need for a separate version for netbooks is removed”.

From 11.04, the core product that you run on your PC will be simply, Ubuntu. Therefore the next release will be Ubuntu 11.04 and you can run that on anything you like from a netbook to a notebook to a desktop”.

However, Ubuntu Server edition will be maintained as a separate product and it named simply as Ubuntu Server 11.04. (via)

  1. If you are a user of Ubuntu 11.04 and prefer the classic desktop version you can simply switch with the click of a mouse,
simply search Login Screen in the unity searcher and run it….
click unlock and enter your psswd….. now click select the arrow nxt to ubuntu in the select as default session, now scroll down to “ubuntu classic” and now restart…..

For non-login automatically people…. when you approach the login screen and select the user you want to login as…. down the bottom right there should be an option bar…. click it, and select “ubuntu classic”

  2. Well, I suppose if one were to have a personal problem with the new graphical environment they could just install unity instead, right? Though that would break the Ubuntu-desktop dummy package, and thus the upgrade path.

  3. I agree with andrew above… I tried the desktop edition on my netwook and its just to large *shrug* I don’t have a brand new netbook and in this it shows. However you can still download the old versions of the netbook remix. I think that this is both a good move and a bad move for Canonical

  4. weird. on my netbook i always ran the desktop version. with 11.04 i wanted a netbook edition. the launcher bar is pretty annoying. searching through the icons to find the program you are working with is a pain.
