Beginning with Android 15, Google has introduced several features to enhance the security of Android phones and safeguard users personal information in the event of loss or theft. Following the implementation of Theft Protection, Offline Device Lock, and Remote Lock, Google is now adding Identity Check, a new feature designed to boost the Theft protection feature of Android.

Identity Check Feature on Android

The newly introduced Identity Check feature on Android is designed to prevent unauthorized individuals from altering your device’s settings and gaining access to your important accounts. When activated, this feature mandates biometric authentication for accessing critical accounts and settings when you are outside of designated trusted locations.

The purpose of this feature is that, when you are outside of trusted locations, biometric authentication will be required when accessing Passkeys and app passwords, when changing your PIN, pattern, or password, disabling Theft protection, or turning off Find my device. You can set one or more trusted locations such as your house, your gym, or your office.

Step-by-Step Guide to Enable Identity Check Feature on Android 15 and Newer Devices

1. First, open the Settings app on your Android phone.

2. In settings, scroll down and select the Security & Privacy option.

3. Now, tap Device unlock and then select Theft protection.

4. Under Theft protection you will see Identity Check option. Select it.

5. On the next screen, turn on Use Identity Check option.

Turn on Identity Check feature on Android 15 and later

Please be advised that the Identity Check feature is currently available on Google Pixel devices with Android 15 and Samsung Galaxy devices operating on One UI 7. Additional devices are expected to receive this feature in the future.

Google is making the Theft Detection Lock feature available on phones that run Android 10 and newer. The company is also working with the GSMA and industry experts to fight mobile device theft more effectively. This collaboration includes sharing information, tools, and prevention strategies. Google plans to release a GSMA white paper, created with the mobile industry, which will offer more insights on how to protect individuals and organizations from device theft (source – Google).
