Open GApps, the open source project of Google apps that is designed to bring latest versions of official Google application packages to devices running on custom ROM, is now available for Android 9 Pie, unofficially though. Without GApps, you will not get full access to the Play Store and other Google apps and services on devices runs custom ROMs.

When a new version of Android releases, it can take a long time for the Open GApps team to be ready for the new update. Android 9 Pie was announced a couple of days back, however XDA senior member ‘Nezorflame’ has released a compatible GApps package and available for download in both ARM and ARM 64 architecture.

Why Open GApps?

Google apps such as the Play store are licensed by Google and are not permitted to be distributed as part of custom ROMs like LineageOS. However, you can download an Open Gapps package and install it from within TWRP recovery, for Google functionality.

Custom builds of Android 9 Pie starts releasing (AOSP custom ROMs are already available for Nexus 5X, Xiaomi Redmi Note 4, Xiaomi Mi A1, etc.) and until the official build of Open GApps is available, you can use these unofficial build for Google functionality.

Keep in mind that, these builds are provided “as is” and cannot guarantee that they will work on all devices or custom builds. You can download the package in both ARM and ARM 64 from source here.
