The most popular ‘Google Public DNS’ now supports ‘DNS over TLS’. This new protocol protects user’s security and privacy by sending DNS queries over an encrypted connection. Android 9 Pie’s Private DNS mode allows users to use DNS-over-TLS, like Google Public DNS or Cloudflare’s 1.1.1.1 DNS on their device. It will provide better security, privacy and faster internet browsing.

Recently, Cloudflare has launched its own ‘privacy-first’ consumer DNS resolver that supports DNS over TLS. You can set up Cloudflare’s 1.1.1.1 DNS on Android 9 Pie or later devices. The Private DNS mode/DNS over TLS is available under the Network & Internet settings menu of the device. See this detailed guide for instruction.

Google Public DNS (8.8.8.8) now supports DNS-over-TLS, which means you can use your Android 9 Pie or later device’s Private DNS mode for faster and secure internet surfing using this new protocol. Note that since DNS over TLS resolves IP from the hostname, you should use accordingly. Here is how to use Google Public DNS’s DNS over TLS on Android 9 Pie and later devices.

How to use Google Public DNS’s DNS over TLS on Android 9 Pie

1. Your device should be running on Android 9 Pie or later (older device does not support DNS-over-TLS).

2. Open Settings > Network & internet settings > Advanced > Private DNS

3. In the popup window, select Private DNS provider hostname.

4. Enter dns.google as the hostname of the DNS provider.

5. Click Save.

NOTE: In Android 9 Pie, the default Private DNS mode is Automatic. It means your phone will use the network specified DNS server and it will attempt a TLS connection before falling back to DNS.

Public DNS servers (Domain Name System) like OpenDNS, Google Public DNS, CloudFlare DNS, etc. can be used as an alternative to your ISP’s DNS server for faster and secure internet surfing. You can use it on your Android phone, computer or Router itself for better security and privacy.

In addition to being very faster than your ISPs DNS sever (most often), they offer many security layers to protect your devices from internet threats and prevent browsing bottleneck to speed up page loading. (Source – Google)
